To stay or not to stay...

I've been reading these posts on the new user agreement thingy. Yes, it looks dodgy (heck I even read the better interpretation from Tumblr, not from here), and for a person whose part of her job is reading contracts, I have a really hard time understanding what the clauses in that agreement actually means, so this brings the question, should I stay in LJ, or move somewhere else?

I've been using LJ for a good around 7 years, not too long, but long enough to have enough posts that it'll cause a hazzle if I'm going to move (especially those with lots of caps). So, the huge question is if I want to move, where should I move? dreamwidth? wordpress? blogspot? tumblr (I still can't get used to using Tumblr especially to post things, and I hate using tags)?

I know I'm not that active anymore in posting stuffs (those takes so much time and nowadays I just don't have as much attention span as I used to have in making those posts. But, still it's just nice to see the old posts and reference to some old stuffs so I'd still want to keep those (memories, keepsakes, emotional attachments, yes those emo stuffs, you know the drill).

So, back to the question, to stay or not to stay...

Sigh...

Probably this is a way of telling me to get my shit together with my RL too...

Well LJ has been owned by the Russians for a while now. And the new T&C's don't make much sense. Hell if you can't make head or tail of it what chance did I have. (I tried though ...but pfft! )

On the other hand with the new privacy laws in the US, I think the question is moot really. I don't think I have any material that the Russians are likely to come after me for (at least I hope not).

I joined Dreamwidth years ago ... and mirror my entries. I think the only thing I need to do is back up some of the pictures that I have on here. to an external and hope I don't ever have to jump ship entirely.

I am too used to being around here, and here too is where I met up some amazing people ... *hugs you* so I'm kinda attached to it.

So for the moment I'm staying ...

That's one of my reasons sticking with LJ, i got used to the platform that i found blogspot and wordpress is not for me T__T, so if i have to use those, then it'll be like a stiff learning curve (though I do have old cooking blog at blogspot LOL).

LJ is like a community sometimes ago, but I'm not sure now ever since tumblr, coz it seems that everybody is there now, but I find tumblr is rather overwhelming (shows my age LOL).

I never use DW before, so maybe I'll try and keep a mirror there... hmmm...

*hugs* yeah, I guess, probably this is the sign to tell me to do something about my RL status quo, being an adult sucks!

Is there really a difference between the old TOS and the new ones? Except for the part of the Russian laws I mean. I've never bothered to read the old TOS so I'm wondering if this one is any different.

I'm the same with you, those can't be bothered to read TOS, so according to the official LJ notice (you'll see when you scroll down the top journal thingy, the thing that I hardly every bothered), there's not much changes on the majority of the clauses, but the thing is the new TOS is in Russian LOL.

It's a Russian based company with majority of it's users Russian so maybe they decided to prioritize their language?

I do think that it's a good thing to back up just in case something happens. LJ seems to be a place of politics in the Russian scene~

yeah, i guess i need to start back-up-ing and cross posting, what i hate is doing back up for those posts with tons of images, I think I lost a few posts because dropbox screw up my account T__T.

still not sure, I'm not a fan of blogspot, a little bit apprehensive with wordpress, not sure about any other platform, and never try dreamwidth. DW is the one that can direct crosspost with LJ, but i'd need to check it out first, so right now, not super sure. even if i back it up, i'd probably loose some of those episode postings... because I store 90% of the pics in LJ and I didn't backup (my mentality is i posted already so i delete it from my laptop)...

That's the trouble, that there's no simple way to back up the images. But mirroring posts to DW is easy and then, if you post from DW instead of LJ, you can even make the mirroring automatic. That said, I renewed my paid subscription with LJ again this year. Maybe next year, I won't, but since the US is no longer a beacon of privacy, will there be a difference?

yes it is, it makes me think another whole blog thing.
I'm not using the paid subscription and I don't think I will unless I'm earning money from my blog LOL.

I don't think there'll be any difference even if it's under US law, coz now governments across the globe are looking for any loopholes for them to rip off more money from common people...

Ugh. That sounds like a lot of work!! LJ should have a feature where you can a quickly download all of your images.

in a way this makes me rethink on how I want to run my blog. It's been very quiet these days because I'm quite pre-occupied with RL stuffs.

Can't stand tumblr for blogging! but I just clicked agree to the tos just so i could access my lj!! it's really annoying. I backup at dreamwidth but not of lot of friends are on there!! I stick with lj to the bitter end!!!
