Shinzanmono ~ 新参者
Managed to marathon this including the SP (Shinzanmono - Wakai Yubi ~ 新参者 - 赤い指) and the movie (Kirin no Tsubasa: Gekijoban Shinzanmono ~ キリンの翼:劇場版新参者). As usual, you'd know when a drama is good and accompanied with a good rating aka it's not under-rated, it'll have and SP and later a movie to boost its franchise and this Shinzanmono is one of them. I didn't watch this drama when it's on aired in 2010 because... didn't even check it out. Only when the movie was released couple months ago, my interest started to pick up and what do you know, it's not just a movie. But what makes me hook into this drama right after the first episode?
Shinzanmono means a new comer. The setting is in Nihonbashi, part of the old town of Tokyo with all its history and long standing shops. In this very town, there's a murder case of an Shinzanmono and this case is to be solved by another Shinzanmono. The drama starts with a murder scene of Mistui Mineko in her very own apartment by strangulation and a detective Kaga Kyoichirou was assigned to this case. Kaga's method of investigation is rather different from Matsumiya Shuhei, his partner as well as, cousin. Kaga is following the small leads that catched his eyes and went through investigating them by going to the stores. Along the investigation, we discovered Mitsui's last moments, her thoughts and reasons why she did certain things as well as, healing those that left behind. During this investigation, we met the reporter from the town's tourist guide book who somehow seemed to be interested on the murder case, the victim's family, and the townfolks. And our hero, Kaga, won't be moving on to the next clue until he peeled off all the lies, and most of the people in this drama are liars too, with various motives, off course.
What I like about this drama is it use the non-usual format of mystery police drama. Usual police drama will have each episode, the detective team will be working on 1 case. Shinzanmoni use all 10 episode to solve 1 murder case. Thus, we have a very focus drama and each episode is in deed full of drama. I totally have no idea who is the actual murderer until episode 10, LOL. On the first episode, we have the clue of coat button and a name card. This then lead to the rice cracker store, and the insurance agent. And before the 1st episode finished, I already searched for some tissues. One of my favorite scenes is on the later episodes (6 or 7) where the dad is trying to erase the grafitti in the basement but after some thought decided not to. It's a short scene, but the emotion that goes with it is rather heartbreaking for me. Another emotional scene is when the drama points out the reason why Mitsui went through the Suitengu temple diligently, it just conveys how much Mitsui loved his son.
Next we have the very awesome character, Detective Kaga. I like Abe Hiroshi in here. His has his own principle, 'Detectives job is not only to solve crimes.' And off course, he's also creepy! Creepy in a sense that he likes to creep the suspects by just standing there until the suspect notice, especially in dark places and then he gives his big stare and a hint of smile, creepy factor is upped by 100%. Off course, he also have a peculiar habit, queueing for the famous Taiyaki, and we never see him actually get the taiyaki, LOL! The character is solid, unwaver and off course played briliantly by Abe-san. Not to mention, you'll see LOTS LOTS LOTS of familiar faces, I mean, most of the supporting roles in this drama are veteran actors and you've seen them everywhere before. And off course, the must be mentioned, Mukai is in it!!! I actually like Mukai doing supporting role better than lead roles. I like him in here better than his own dramas, or am I weird? Maybe because in here the script is solid while his drama has only so so script? Not sure, I just go by my guts, not a drama expert LOL.
And off course, the OST! It's Machi Monogatari by Yamashita Tatsuro. I love it whenever this song comes out at the end episode, after those tearful, bittersweet, heartwarming ending and you have this nostalgic tune. Perfect ending of a drama.
Then, we move on to the SP. It's set 2 years before the drama, so it's a prequel actually. If you have watched the drama, you can relate it in 2 ways. This is the case that Matsumiya and Kaga worked together, which Matsumiya mentioned in drama that he's worked with Kaga before. And this is where the scene when Ami ran out of ink and Kaga lent her the pen. The format is rather different in here, we're shown here how the bad guy scheming to fool Kaga, and how they failed badly too (Kaga was just way too observant and ridiculously detailed in investigating, so amateurs are no match to him).
And the movie... prepare some tissues. The chain of events are awesomely lined up to make me tune to the movie though lack of sleep from the day before of marathon half of the drama and watching the rest plus the SP. And the movie's OST is Sign by Juju, the specialist of heartbreaking songs.

PS, to say how good it is, I recommend this drama to my friend right after I finished marathon the drama and he also did the marathon the soonest he watched it. That's how good it is LOL.
And I found some goodies over the Youtube too... ahh... this is the good points of having no Johnny's in a drama.
