Aiba Manabu ~ 相葉マナブ Epi 036
Jan. 8th, 2014 12:58 amIt's been a little bit more than a week from New Year and... it's shitty... not much good things come across me these few days and I think things will get more shitty as we're coming to a year end. And as usual I go back to my oasis to drown my sorrows (along with sake, ramen, and anything not suitable for a diet)...
So, the first episode of Manabu for 2014 is gotta be very close to the big day itself, so we're having Aiba-chan making MOCHI!!! The gooey sticky mochi (ok, it's mochi mochi, cute right? LOL). I really love this threesome pairings together in a show (I won't be surprise there's a fanfic on these 3 out there). Their chemistry and teamwork in producing an interesting and entertaining episode is just... LOVE!
I won't be using my dictionary because this is my quick therapy session, but the gist of it should be about there XD if you feel something amiss, do let me know )

Traditional mochi making and what cause Aiba-chan's expression?

The episode begins with Aiba-chan wishing Watabe and Sawabe Happy New Year. He seems extremely cheery in this episode. Something good happened on your birthday? (consolation after being pranked on your b'day and then aired on national TV? hohoho)

Do everybody eat mochi? Watabe not eating mochi every year, Aiba-chan roughly eats ozoni every year (it's the rice cake soup for New Year). So what's the meaning of eating mochi? Apparently it's for your health and longevity.

The traditional mochi looks like this, that they need to crack it open then eat it on the 11th.

A funny moment. Aiba-chan is saying 'Mochi no youni...' expecting his partners to respond but none comes up and it becomes awkward LOL...

From the same mochi dough, you can make these types of dish! Fantastic! I've tried the upper 2, delish! the below 2 is modern creation XD...

They're making a wish at the temple so Aiba-chan is praying for the Arashi 15th Year anniversary (Omedetou! you've been working hard that long!)

And off course, praying for Aiba Manabu too. Aiba-chan is making sure he'll work hard this year too (ganbare!).

To make mochi, they need the gadget, so they go to the shop to get one, Aiba-chan is fooling around with the tool to hold the tsukune and then portion it when you cook for nabe to which Watabe commented that he's gonna only use it 2 times in a year.

And a ramen strainer, Aiba-chan is quick to demonstrate how to use the strainer (he could open 1 ramen shop and I'll be sure to patron it if he's cooking LOL)

The base to make mochi is that big and heavy, so that means Kurupoko is carrying that thing around? haha

Their guessing on how much the biggest base cost, from left to right, Aiba-chan (50K Yen), Watabe (100K Yen) and Sawabe (180K Yen). The correct answer is 192K Yen, so Sawabe is the closest. Heee, that's expensive!

They use Keyaki (the hammer)? apparently Aiba-chan mistaken it with Hinoki, which is used for ofuro (Aiba-chan and his passion for ofuro LOL)...

so what about the beater? how much does it cost? same order left to right, Aiba-chan 150K Yen, Watabe 80K Yen and Sawabe 65K Yen, still very expensive. The correct answer is only 22.8K Yen. So total package for the smallest tool is about 93K Yen.

With that kind of price, Aiba-chan: Can we have it on rental? LOL

It's mochi making time!!!

Mochi rice grain is different from the normal rice grain! So you need to soak it because mochi rice is harder than the normal ones.
And you have to soak it for 8 hours.

Sensei asked Aiba-chan to stir the rice with hand... which is COLD! and ask Aiba-chan to put some love to it.
Aiba-chan: I don't get what you mean! hihihi...

So, to cut it short, they just change it to the already soaked mochi rice grain. And Aiba-chan pretends that it's already 8 hours with the expression as if he did all the hard work haha...

Then they cook the rice for 45 minutes and what are they doing while waiting? The picture speaks for itself haha...

Aiba-chan purposely take pick of the cooked rice to get the vapor hit his glasses hehe... and the rice looks good!

and he cannot stop eating it, even go for 2nd bite and exclaimed that he made mochi inside his mouth as it does has the mochi taste.

So, you shouldn't start by hitting the rice hardly, you'd need to mash the rice first.

and it's hard work...

Aiba-chan change with Watabe and then Sawabe... they continue mashing for about 20 minutes.

But with plus minus, it became 30 minutes.

now it's the punching hitting time! First pair, Watabe as the person pulling the mochi dough and Aiba-chan as the hitter... their tempo is... off LOL, so sensei asked his assistant to give example on how to pull the dough.

She did it so fast that Aiba-chan just happily and seriously hitting the dough.

Then when it change back to Watabe.. huehehe... and Aiba-chan LOL because Watabe is only touching the dough not pulling it over.

keep on laughing, see? he's so happy...

Finally Watabe gather the courage to do it properly. He must be scared that Aiba-chan might hammer his hand hihi...

Aiba-chan is asking Sawabe to do a gag when it's Sawabe turn to hit the mochi. Watabe laid out the scenario: saying 'my girlfriend is no more around', but by the time we notice you're married with kids (LOL, so drama! I hope I get it right)

Now it's Aiba-chan's turn to be the dough puller, and he's good at it!

Sensei interrupt the rhythm by telling them to keep the tempo, but then when they resume, they cannot get back to the previous tempo haha... and blame the sensei XD

Sensei did some demonstration, but only for awhile before passing back the baton LOL

Last spurt!

So total time spend on this exercise? about 20 minutes.

so this is the end result

Fun time!

Apparently Shoyu and Nori is everybody's favorite, judging on how fast they answer on what they want to eat.

pretty!

So, we have anko (red bean paste), kina powder, pizza (tomato sauce & cheese), and choco banana

Oops! the choco is not melted!

And apparently nobody knows how to melt choco and cooking sensei is not around! *gasp!*, where's ChocoJun when we need him!

LOL, in the end they ask the staff.

Pizza mochi means just flatten mochi dough, add on tomato sauce and cheese on top then put into toaster... yum!!!!
Choco banana is just a decorating exercise! Fun time!

Omochi full course!

Itadakimasu!!!

Aiba-chan take a big gulp and...

He can taste the rice...

He's pleased with the pizza. Sawabe commented it's like a fake italian XD

OMG, LOL!!!

After gulping the WHOLE THING. Aiba-chan approve of the banan choco...

And keep on digging!
Final message: eat a lot (mochi) for good health this year too!

NEW SEGMENT! yeyy!

This time we get to see how to make your own shoyu!

Ingredients koji (malt) 350g, salt 110g and water 500ml.
First mix salt and water until dissolved, then pour into the malt inside the hard pet bottle.

Then for half a year, everyday mix...

So everyday you need to mix it for 15min (turning it upside down repeatedly), in which Aiba-chan do it with swag...

Looks familiar? LOL!!! Natsukashii!

See you next week!
相葉ちゃん今年もよろしくお願いします!
ahhh... I feel better LOL...
