This rewatch activity started because I cannot get rid of 'I FOR YOU' song in my head, until now. That line 'Kokoro kara, kimi ni aishiteru...' seemed to play on repeat button in my head. Hence I thought, maybe I might as well rewatch the drama. I watched it more than a decade ago (yes, it's that old!!), and never did a rewatch. That time I watched it with the transcript on my hand and I just found Kyoko Fukuda's character is a ridiculously whiny, selfish and annoying brat. Plus Takeshi Kaneshiro was damn hot.

Years later, now, that I have substitle, and another hundreds of drama to compare with, rewatching this drama is a totally different experience. I still think that Masaki was selfish and annoying, but I can appreciate and even symphatize with her character better and Kyoko Fukuda did an awesome job considering she's only 17 that time to deliver such maturity and emotion. And Takeshi... he's just mesmerizing to watch (ha!).

Fangirling at its best!

So, what does it mean by appreciating this drama better? I love the character development and emotions here. Both of the leading characters start with emptiness and live their lives recklessly (that's why Kyoko got HIV in the first place, and she did it for a freaking concert ticket! --> this makes me wonder whether those fangirls are doing the same thing to be able to buy those scalpted Arashi concert tickets, scarry!). Then they fill themselves with all the emotions etc etc (including problems, scandals and all the drama) that eventually the characters just naturally grow. What I love more about old drama is that they know how to make it dramatic, over the top, which is somewhat lacking in the current dramas that we have. Even with cliche pick up lines such as this...

'I picked you out of that crowd of 2000'

We know it's cliche, cheesy, but do we love it? Yes, definitely. And with such an eye candy with that kind of smouldering voice (yes, I totally don't remember Takeshi Kaneshiro's voice is that smouldering, even better than Tamaki's, and this drama reminds me).

I find that Kamisama dialogues are a little bit choppy and messy. Seems that so long we, as the audience, get the idea, that's fine. Plus we have tons of cliche lines in here. But what makes it good is that Takeshi delivered all those cheesy pick up lines beautifully with the subtle emotions (and sometimes more dramatic), and with his eyes. There's 1 scene where Keigo got a message that Kyoko was taken to the hospital. His horrified expression there was just... wow, it was glued to my heart. And now I really wonder, why he's not in J-drama anymore (anybody knows? You can enlighten me LOL), As for Kyoko, her character seems selfish, but then again, that's what normally teenagers behave... being brats. Causing problems that may not be intentional, forcing people to give what they want, making wrong decitions, that's the beauty of being young, isn't it? It's just that the drama adds more spices to it... HIV. I'd guess that in old dramas, they don't really do that much attention to the details eg. ensuring all the correct information on HIV, AIDS etc. Not as much as what current dramas do. The TV stations are more careful with that now, but they compensate it with the lack of the dramatization.

Having said that, let's say we just take out the HIV component out of this drama. What do we have?

We label this a crazed fangirl. But would we do that if it meant for our idol to see our handmade banner aka love? Yes.

A very typical old fanfic story (there was a time when a fanfic is not about OTP or yaoi). A fan meets her idol and by miracle her idol has feelings for her (gasp!) and after series of love you, hate you, love you, I don't want to part with you, they live happily ever after. If you see Masaki's bedroom, the other side of her bedroom was like a mini shrine for Keigo, and after she got that freaking big poster, she becomes a creepy fangirl. Amazingly, Keigo just turned blind eye when he visited Masaki's room LOL.
We'll look like this too if our ichiban plays with our hair and stares at us like that.

And then, the rabu rabu scenes! Old drama are better on these types of scenes. They're more daring and full of emotions. Other examples of these types that I love are dramas like Pride (all time favorite), Love Generation (well, basically all Kimutaku old drama LOL). So different compare to current drama where kissing equals to lip touching (SIGH!!), and suddenly Shitsuren Chocolatier looks like so raunchy. And if we went kya on Nino's horrible kissing scenes on Freeter, then what do we do when we see Takeshi did all the job in all the kissing scenes here? Goodness, he's a damn good kisser LOL. I'd close 1 eye on the girl just stand there to be kissed and play dead and let's leave it at that.
I just cap the hugging, watch the kissing scenes yourself and get what I meant. LOL

Then, lastly, let's see Keigo's characteristic. He's hot, handsome, rich, selfless to practically just granting every single Masaki's requests (even it costs him his jobs), loves the heroinne only, brooding and always look cool. Hmm... it's totally unrealistic yet it sounds awfully familiar... ... only he's human, not a 100 years old vampire! Way long before Edward Cullen, the showbiz had entertained us with Ishikawa Keigo LOL.

I'm still not sure how to get rid of 'Kokoro kara, kimi ni aishiteru' repeats, maybe playing 'Monday Girl' on repeat will help... hmm...

I get that song stuck in my head a lot too!

Actually Fukada Kyoko was only 15 at the time! (The character was 17.) I agree that at that age and with little acting experience she was impressive.

What I love more about old drama is that they know how to make it dramatic, over the top, which is somewhat lacking in the current dramas that we have. Even with cliche pick up lines such as this...
SO TRUE! I always need more old dramas in my life...
