That Harem Drama and That Evil Queen

spsnWhile we're waiting for the continuation of the horrid ending that we're left of this week (I still couldn't let go of it until I watch the next episode), let's talk about the character that everybody hates, that evil Queen Yoo. She's the mother of 3th (Wang Yo), 4th (Wang So) and 14th (Wang Jung) prince with the very clear one objective in this drama, to rise up to be the King's mother. And for her to reach that position, she won't hesitate to use her children as tools. To make the story short, basically so far she scarred little Wang So's face when protested the King for not taking more concubines, then threw away Wang So to be 'adopted' since she saw him as the damaged good, then literally made Wang Yo to do all the dirty jobs, while mercilessly insulting, assaulting the other ladies beneath her who she deemed had crossed her. Wow, we're not even halfway through the whole series yet and we'll see more scheming & insults from her, for sure.
Yes, she's so full of hate especially towards our angsty tsundere, Wang So, but that's what fascinating about her.
Who don't feel like throwing something at her?
First of all, she's consistent! She doesn't waver or even think twice of her objective. The main theme is her, and has to be her, nobody else. If it's not her, she'll make sure that it'll be her, with whatever means possible. And her being constant applies to everybody. We have yet to see her using Wang Jung, but I feel that time will come. Currently her main tool is Wang Yo and she used him very well.
Consistency is a charm!
Not to mention ordering people to kill during family dinner, wow!
A lot of people may say 'How could she? They're her own children! How could she has no motherly love at all?' If you think this way and think how such person exists, good on you, you're born in a loving family and should be grateful for your mother. In the olden days and even the current society, there're mothers who think that children are means, not the precious human beings that they should love and raise. The degree of such thinking may not be as extreme as what we see in Queen Yoo, but it's there somewhere along the line. I won't go as far for example because to be honest I saw the image of my late grandma when I watch Queen Yoo for the first time. My late grandma was not exactly the sweet and loving grandma. She only cared about the sons and their children, spoiled them beyond means. Daughters? They're tools for her comfortable life, and she would use reversed psychology attacks to ensure the daughters get what she wanted and I've witnessed countless occassions on how eager the daughters were to please her, exactly like how Wang So tried to please Queen Yoo. So similar that it kinds of freaks me out when I think about it. So, my point is? If we're taking the throne out of the context, Queen Yoo could be just like any other mothers out there, with tendency to play favorites and ensuring her kids do her bidding.
Let's go back to the drama. I find that the only barrier between Wang So and Queen Yoo is the scar. Though it's caused by yours truly, but you need to remember she made no mistakes, hence the harsh & cruel treatment towards Wang So (because he made her remember her 'imperfection') and the reason why he was sent away. She then latched herself to raise her next best option, Wang Yo, groom him to be her mini me. I find that she only showered affection to Wang Jung, though it's more like spoiling him and making him become a rather sheltered boy, which is why he's so different compared to his older brothers.
What Queen Yoo may not realize due to her own prejudice and character is that she may choose the wrong tool. Wang Yo may be better in terms of appearance (scar free,though we know scarred Wang So is actually as hot as our heater during winter time) but Wang So is more in the same wavelength with her naturally, not trained like what she has done to Wang Yo and the example is shown on the scenes before the rain ritual. And you could imagine what went through Wang Yo's mind when he heard his mom said exactly what his brother had said earlier. Also let's imagine further if our Queen raise Wang So just like she raise Wang Yo, with Wang So's loyal trait, he'll be literally the perfect tool. And since she throw Wang So away in episode 4, she'll be up against him instead. You can also see in some scenes after episode 4 that Wang So is getting stronger and even on par when bantering with the Queen, and you can actually see the similarity on both's train of thoughts, something that you don't see when Wang Yo talks to her. With Wang Yo, it's always more like him taking Queen's order instead of discussing at the same level.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, whether you like it or not.
And though Wang So is pitiful, but after episode 9, I find that Wang Yo is equally pitiful and mentally weaker. Wang Yo was mean and cruel but he's a by-product of his mother.
Plus, we have Wang Jung threw the perfect question:
