Aiba Manabu ~ 相葉マナブ Epi 006
Jun. 5th, 2013 12:55 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
After a long meeting, MRT broke down drama, and finally home and cozy with my mini Kirin lager beer (yes, I look like Hotaru now, minus the guru guru on the veranda), I finally get to watch this tea episode. I think the staff should know better that Aiba-chan plus roke shooting equals good if not gold episode! This episode still can't beat the takenoko episode, but come on, Aiba-chan always lights up whenever he's outside XD...
This time it's about tea! It's a very nostalgic subject, besides the fact that I love tea. I basically grew up with tea because... my dad was doing tea business for 30 years, the buying and selling, luckily not owning the plantation. Sniffing raw teas, cooked teas, different teas from different plantations, visits to the bottled teas factories, yeah, that's my childhood LOL. Compared to tea factories in Indonesia (well maybe it's different now, but we're talking about the condition from decades ago), the small tea factory in this episode treats its tea with care, probably because of its small size.

Different position to start this episode, Aiba-chan is getting more geeky by each episode.. only in the beginning LOL
Today is about tea!

May is the season for new tea.

Why Japanese like to drink green tea? What is Katekin? Here's the wiki for Katekin aka Catechin.

But interestingly, is there a tea plantation in Tokyo?

This time the member is Watabe, Sawabe and Suzuki. Aiba-chan started with his location shooting experience in the takenoko episode that they have to find the takenoko themselves, which means...

Off course, it's the same pattern! Love this show already! Aiba-chan, you're really a city boy huh? Can't imagine how to pick tea?

So the search began...

Where to find??? Members are getting worried LOL

The grass eater ojisan is back!

Firsts, Watabe was complaining that the staffs had stepped on the grass and they're going to eat those grass! LOL
First grass is Oobako (Plantain), according to oji-san, there's some sweetness in it.

But Sawabe begged to differ LOL In the beginning, it tasted like edamame.

And Aiba-chan's? To him, the aftertaste is creamy... interesting description for taste of grass...

Then they tasted more of it...

They found a 'farm' and asked the owner about the tea plantation. There is one nearby, to the members relief.
And being nosy, Aiba-chan started to ask about what's planted in the farm XD and we have kabu aka turnips.

Aiba-chan + turnip... is this considered G rated? His habit of sticking his tongue out first whenever he's eating something long (yeah, whatever long things eg. banana), I don't think it's suitable for children viewing, but ladies will love it (me included) ... it just looks... wrong LOL

Then he ate properly, and it's sweet.

And Sawabe just ate what Aiba-chan just licked... it just looked wrong, wrong wrong LOL

And they finally found the plantation, it's a small plantation, but how they can grow tea in not so high place?

The first thing they notice is the fans... what's that for?

The owner seemed surprise with their appearance, the members confirming that they're celebrities LOL

Aiba-chan being curious is just cute *hug pillow*...
The purpose for having those fans are to measure coldness. It's to produce spring frost when the sprout comes out, so that it matches the air in high places, naruhodo.

And they started working in the plantation. Aiba-chan being city boy, impressed with the fresh cut tea trees.

And they started learning how to handpick tea leaves XD. So, I can't be bothered with the narration, basically the first top is peko 1 (the right cap) --> expensive, the 2nd leave below is peko 2, the rest is peko 3. those leaves that they just use the machine to cut is most likely to be peko 3. Then between peko 3, you'll need to separate the leaves and the stems... they fetch for lower price.

So, let's learn the basic of how to make sencha

1. The tea leaves was humidified by strong wind to ferment it
2. Next the leaves were steamed to determine the flavor

3. After steaming then the leaves were cooled
4. Then they're crumpled, which is the #1 point (me: heee, I don't know this one is important)

Lastly they're dried using hot wind and sort out according to quality, and it's done.
Almost same method as Chinese tea making, I guess it's the same for any kinds of tea.

So, here we have 4 types of teas...

We have green tea: There's no fermentation for green tea...
Red tea: is the fermented tea
Yes, yes, it's from the same leaves (the members were full of awes XD, kawaii students ne). During fermentation, it's when all those different fragrance comes out.

Oolong tea: half fermented
So, yeah all of them come from the same leaves. XD

And houji-cha is the same leaves roasted (here's the wiki)

Now they're making the sencha by hand!
First, steam it.
Then cool it by airing it.

They move around airing it. It's hot!

Sawabe asked a good question: How long they supposed to do this. Sensei: 50 minutes.
Members: Heeeeee!!!!!!!! and Aiba-chan just dropped his leaves LOL

Not so clear hand porn, but yeah... XD
So, let's study green tea history while airing the tea XD efficient use of time!

Bonus cap: Sounanda face of Aiba-chan is kawaii and pretty!

The method that members were doing now is the same method used to make green tea during Edo period.
Such method of making green tea was founded by Nakatani Sanojo-san.

Aiba-chan asked what's the relationship between katekin and dieting. Tea has cafeinne, Vit C and teanin. Cafeinne and katekin work together to reinforce fat consumption (maybe wrong, but my brain not digesting a lot). Moral of the story, green tea is good for your body. Drink more tea and you'll loose weight (provided you don't eat junk food ne).

Quiz time. 2 people who guess the right answer gets to do some tea dishes. Losers... continue airing the tea leaves XD.
First question: In Muromachi period, who use hot water for tea? A; Sendou (something)

Second question: Where's the 2nd biggest tea production in Japan? A: Kagoshima (Aiba-chan, you've been reading!)

And the loser team continues XD

Winners get to cook tea leaves tempura and tea leaves fried rice (using the dried tea leaves and the fresh ones)

The result of handmade tea, including crumpling

Full course tea dishes!

The taste? Off course, oishii!!! Aiba-chan is happy!

They're too busy with oishii and umai, not much explanation except for tea fragrances LOL.

So, what about their home made tea?

Aiba-chan: The color is there but there's no taste LOL!!!!
Explanation: The taste will be only apparent when it's on the dried state.
So, edo period people has been drinking quite tasteless tea then?
Medetashi medetashi!!
