We heard this too many times. 'I love k-drama, it's the best', 'No, J-dorama is the best' and then it'll lead to another catfight, too often seen on Youtube comments for compilation clips (yeah you know which ones). Recently I've been doing lots of k-drama catch up marathon due to travelling, the super slow dorama season (I'd prefer to have sub for police and medical dramas for me not to work my brain watching them) plus also due to years of not watching k-drama, and really, after watching so many J-dorama, going back to k-drama lets me see k-drama at a different angle, well, more of a different mindset. There are many areas that we can look into when we're talking about drama, in this case particularly is the K and the J. My criteria of watching K-drama is the same as J-dorama, prettiness is a must and no melodrama (I just can't watch this type of K-drama as it affects my emotion), the rest is sort of tolarable to some certain level. I may end up spouting lots of stuffs which are common sense and obvious or even completely different take from common opinions, and be warned, this will be a loooong reading.

If you see my comparison on K-drama later, it's mostly Lee Jun Ki or Jang Geun Suk's drama, that's because I'm running through their resume for the past couple of weeks. Tried Kim Bum's resume but gave up halfway. I can't remember the old ones in detail and I didn't really keep track on what I've watched in the past and I don't plan to rewatch any or going through more unless I developed an interest. As for J-drama, I'll throw in those which I remember on top of my head (not going to do extra researches) as this is supposed to be for fun, not an academic paper.

Let's start dissecting XD!!!

Am quite satisfied with Epi 1! It'll be another very wordy drama, lots of analysis and deduction, and very detailed at that as well. But what I'm more happy to see is that Matsujun confidence level is there and not being overshadowed by Kagawa Teruyuki. I was a bit worried about it but I'm quite happy to see the synergy in this episode.

I like this shot :) It gives you a good feels after this first episode

Matsujun character is very cheeky in here. I like how he annoys his colleagues with that straight face.

Eikura Nana will forever wearing flats whenever she acts with Arashi... sigh...

Seems ages and finally arama got the list for Spring 2016 drama out here. I like the posting structure as it's just a scroll down format, who's in it and what's the story. I think this is just me but my interest in J-drama moves towards either police or anything besides romance related, except one or two. Found that Spring 2016 is a rather slow season. Tried Love Song, I couldn't even last for more than half episode. My list of this season is:
Sekai Ichi Muzukashii Koi ~ obligatory watching
99.9 ~ it's Matsujun, regardless how awful the hair is, it's Matsujun
Yutori desu ga nani ka ~ the premise is interesting, I hope they tackle lots of generation gap issues here
DIAS police ~ same reason as Yutori, I hope it's not that complicated so I can watch without waiting for the subs
Good Partner - Mutekina bengoshi ~ is this season the season for lawyer drama? Hope this one is worth the watch though.

Not so sure list:
Omukae desu ~ at least Fukushi Shota is not in some shoujo manga live action (or his era has passed and handed over to Yamazaki Kentaro?)
Watashi kekkon dekinai janakute, shinain desu ~ as much as I like Fujiki, I'm very skeptical with this kind of drama nowadays

And it's likely that I'll wait until a few episodes are up than watching it week by week... somehow I become an empty shell when I got home from work...
Meanwhile, I've been marathoning some k-dramas (basically running through some pretties' resume for the good or bad), hope I can write something about it as it's quite interesting watching k-drama now after watching so many j-drama :)

The main reason is because my FB dash flashed something that I thought I will never see again... SS301 comeback!!! Well, not SS501, but better 3 than nothing at all, plus after oh so long ago.
This one to be exact... )
They've all grown up! All the feels came back at once, especially when they maintain their style and not really following the current k-pop trend *the damn autotune*, and keep it simple. Not to mention that the main song, Pain, reminds me A LOT of U R Man (well, it's done by the same 3 of them). Nevermind that the cameraman work was crappy (I always complain about M-sta cameraman, after this and older k-pop music show stage performances, I don't think I can complain much about M-sta anymore :/).

I don't think they'll ever pass over their peak time again (those were really good times! Good old k-pop, lots of varieties of music) but it's still good to see them back at least these 3. My fave is the maknae anyway ;).
I hope to see them more active in k-pop. I'll come back checking on k-pop for them.

I'll never forget SS501 because theirs was the first concert that I watched! Ahh... really good old times...

And for fun comparison:
SS501 at their peak... )

Doing this because it's Matsujun and somehow they've been doing Tsukiji roke... is it because Tsukiji is going to move in November this year? Anyway, am so happy that Matsujun again shows us the cute side of him, and it reminds me again, how much he has changed, for the better. I guess age does has relationship with confidence level, at least for Matsujun :).
Considering the last time I watched Abunai Yakai was quite some times ago... they've changed the segments again. Now they have guests put out requests, then the staff work it out... somehow, no more of that small pop up door. I'm quite indifferent about this, but anyway, Yakai is highly dependant on who's the guest, so as long as the segment is fun to watch, it's not a problem for me.

I only cap segments related to Matsujun. Kuroki Hitomi's segment is on the cafe whereby you're paired with a guy (the guy pay higher fee and with time limit). It's an interesting way to meet people provided that people are quite honest and with no ulterior motive. I think Sho-chan's quite intrigued with the last dude that he imitated his way of speaking LOL.

Very long caps ahead... I always take more than I should have... )

This drama turns around very quick and smooth... I've been wondering why the turning point has not appeared yet and the drama answered me in this episode... I like how Michiko deals with her feelings here, no hesitation, unlike the usual damsel in distress with lots of doubts and hence dragging...

Sagi-JYANAKU rice, yokatta na Michiko?

Oh for the fun of it. Because it's so fun watching Shunin & Michiko bickering...
Here's the thing, which person you'd rather be with, the person who you always try to impress OR the person who you could basically talk about EVERYTHING and know all your bad and good points? I guess the answer is quite obvious, well, drama makes it oh so obvious :p.

*spoiler* )

I almost dropped this drama because episode 1 is just pissed me off. The girl is overly naive plus stupid and it seriously made me boil, especially she's on the 30s range of age. However I decided to continue watching this because *cough* Miura Shohei, and unfortunately in here he's again the pretty face who will not get the girl (when we're going to get a drama when this cutie actually gets the girl? LOL). Episode 2 is much better, the girl's character starts to change for the better still overly naive but less stupid, thanks to Shunin's nagging. Now, the Shunin here is also another peculiar character. Basically he's a nice dude with sort of foul mouth (only to Michiko though) but he cannot let anything stray (being animals or humans) alone, plus a dash of tsundere. So, I guess, that's why these 2 kind of match each other, and I like the chemistry in this drama, not awkward :).

Shunin is from Showa era too. I don't care if it's considered sexist or what shit, it's kakkoii if done right :p.

These 2 are easy to watch LOL...

Bonus, we have Shunin speaking proper English, plus Mandarin, nice! Something rare in J-dramaland LOL. Plus Shunin seems to have so many licenses out there from cooking to crane. As Michiko repeatedly said 'Shunintte nanimono nanda?' HA!

A brooding Shunin... kakkoii na...

Seriously, it's been years since the last time we had good JCD! And finally Johnny's has redeemed its glorious glitters & feathers from 2015-2016 JCD. They literally went all out, well, 95% all out because V6 & HSJ were not in Tokyo Dome, but still, they pull lots of good stuffs! This time they really indulged the fans and giving fans what they wanted, including all those cross groups OTP! I don't really get the top 2 best OTP, but it's fun anyway.

For al the glitters & feathers to welcome the new year... )

Happy New Year! While we're still in the festive mood, which soon to be over, let's star 2016 with Arashi ni Shiyagare SP. I find that only Matsujun & Ohno's segments are interesting, and the rest is mediocore if not boring (unless off course, you're a fan of Japanese baseball or Miranda Kerr. And this segment deserves caps because V6 Mama is one of the guests and he cooked! As on the surprise announcement done in this segment, well, I'm not sure, really. I don't feel lots of traction on the last few Arashi drama, not the kind that I'll wait expectantly for the next episode. So, anyway, enjoy the first few days of 2016!

Another long caps... )

Time sure flies really fast and it's been more than a year of me living in Melbourne. Through all the culture shocks, series of bewilderment & much of rants and happiness in the course of 1 year, one thing I defenitely enjoy here is the coffee and the brunches. Yes, Mebourne is well-known for its coffee & cafe culture. There are rows, tons and gazzilions cafes for you to choose to fill your tummy. From neighborhood or practically in the middle of nowhere to the smack in the middle of CBD, there will be amost always a place for you to go for a cup of coffee and brekkie food. You'll feel that there're just too many options out there, and mind you, they serve almost similar type of menu, I mean, how much variety you can have for brunch-style food, but, you'll be surprise that none of these cafes serves exactly the same thing. There's always a tweak with the same dish. For example, the basic, egg benedicts, it will come out different on your plate at different joints. Some will use horseradish hollandaise sauce, plus shredded apples, some will go for the classic hollandaise sauce with spinach side dish, and some will just dump bacons on your plate (I hate it when they do this LOL).

So, it's a no brainer that if you google Melbourne cafe, there'll be tons of listings for cafe, some will title it as 'best cafe' like this onefor click baits, some will just simply do a listing. For tourists and even some locals, they will hold on to this kind of list and swear by them. I did go to some mentioned in lots of those types of listings, such as, Hardware Society, Top Paddock, Chez Dre and The Kettle Black. These are cafes with long queue (average queueing time is 1 hour plus) and big names. You'd want to go there to experience and taste what's the hype all about. From these visits, I learned that I'd rather stick with hunting for the neighborhood cafes, save the travel and queueing time (especially if it's windy and cold), save a couple of bucks (I don't believe in over 20$ for brunch food menu items), enjoy the food, the coffee and the cafe experience alltogether and most importantly, receive the customer treatment that I deserve (not being thrown the bill just after I finish eating, I understand if it's HK cafe, but not Western cafe, nope, not acceptable).

Every single neighborhood will more likely to have joints which are frequented by the nearby peeps and hence, these cafes have more friendly and welcoming atmospheres, not simply serve the food and pressure you to leave the moment you finish your meal for the sake of high customer turnover. Even if these cafe are bustling busy, packed with people, there are still some people with their laptops and books and left undisturbed (I'm one of the examples here because I like to eat, sip my coffee, read my books and do people watching), and the wait staffs look happier and not in rush for everything. Their menu is heavier towards the gluten free and vegetarian dishes or the sweet stuffs like pancake or french toasts. Very seldom it has meat mixed together in the menu, and most of the time it's just smoked/cured salmon. That's the most meaty stuff you can get. If the cafe has lunch menu, then meaty menu is still scarce and it's likely to be a burger or sandwich, the rest of the menu will be salad, smoothies, and other green leafie stuffs. Most neighborhood cafes that I visited has price tag of below 20$ for their menu items, some of them will have 1 or 2 reaching the range of 20$, but that's still very rare and they're on the lunch menu, not the brekkie menu.

I live in St Kilda area, and there're already lots of cafes in this area alone to be tried and tested, even after 1 year living here, I still have lots to try because I ended up frequenting the same joint over and over and over and forgot about other places that I want to try. Most of the time, I just walked into them without reading the review (because they're all subjective and the best way is to just find out by yourself anyway). If the food or the coffee doesn't live up to my expectation (very uberly subjective), then I'd just move on to another joint, afterall they're plenty out there and the competition is fierce! Having said that, the below are a few cafes that I've been visited and frequented as examples of neighborhood cafes.

Really, a few... )

If you happen to be visiting Melbourne, do try to visit just any cafes nearby the neighborhood where you stay or ask the locals where the good coffee joints are. You will likely to get a totally different answers from those listed in 'best cafe in Melbourne' postings. Instead of swearing by those listings, use them as a guide or reference on what to expect when you visit a cafe. You'll get a totally different experience and a story to tell. I know I do.

I just marathoned the whole 26 episodes of the anime (Himitsu the Revelation). Not sure how close the anime to the manga, but at least now I know roughly what to expect out of the movie. In short, it'll be about a team of detective called Sector Nine which job is to solve crime cases via analyzing the brain memories, to the point of actually convert those memory to visual and through that there's a hope to identify the true criminal. The subject of pondering from this franchise is everybody has a secret that they don't want to reveal, is it ethical to watch all these secrets for the name of solving crime?

The live action movie will tone down the brain part as in, instead of having the frozen brain (which means cutting the head to extract the brain at the background - you can't help but imaging that, right?, and this maybe too grotuesque for some live action viewers), we have the whole body and just the head is attached to cables for scanning. Not as convincing as the manga but, OK, I'll accept.

Maki is a very complicated and mysterious character. He doesn't talk much, except for work (analysis and ordering his team members). The manga definitely will explore A LOT of his past, etc etc because he's the main character and also the pretty one. I'm quite curious how the movie turn out with Ikuta Toma as Maki. In general, it'll look like a typical character that Toma would play (after all, some of his movie characters are those mysterious or psychotic ones too), but this time it's kind of borderline.

Akio's character is the very earnest hardworking dude who will more likely to go above and beyond to seek justice and also the very good pair for doujinshi material. Seriously, this franchise is screaming to the doujinshi out there 'make me, make me'.

And, not to mention Matsuzaka Tori is Suzuki. I'm expecting high performance from him, especially after watching him in Library Wars and Nihon no Ichiban Nagai Hi, for major angst and the clash between Suzuki and Maki. Damn he's literally everywhere.

Another tidbits, the director is Keishi Ohtomo, the same director for Kenshin trilogy and Platinum Data. I'd think this movie will be closer to Platinum Data style.

And there you go, we have 1 out so many movies to be anticipated in 2016... it's AUG 2016 release for goodness sake.

and clearly I need HD quality. Johnny's, when we can have the bloody DVD?
WOWOW did a good job in capturing the awesomeness of V6's 20th Anniversary concert, though, nothing beat the real stuff, especially this concert.

Some caps... )

If WOWOW can capture the concert this well, I have a very high expectation for Johnny's (AVEX) to release a super awesome DVD and capture this concert much much better from WOWOW! This concert has SO MANY things that can be used for digest and extra gimmick, seriously, I'm not joking. MC digest is a given, Riidaa's Sexy digest is a must, Made in Japan digest can be considered, 360C angle of any dance number (supernova - yes, you can bloody repeat this, break the wall - yes another repeat, wait for you, timeless, arghhh, so many!!!).

Bakuman

spsn: (Default)

Library Wars post will have to wait because I'm sorting out lots of things in my head for that one. In the meantime, I watched Bakuman today. I find it always interesting to watch for audience demographic. Bakuman is a seinen manga live action, so normally you'd expect to see, well, dudes. I did see some dudes, but there were more ladies than dudes, and with variety of age too, not just teenagers. Definitely lots of manga fans watching this movie, but I don't think I'd be wrong if there are people just watching it for Sato Takeru. As for me, I started to read the manga some time ago, but I didn't manage to finish it, though, so there may be some aspects that are missing.

In short, Bakuman is the fast track story of how to become a full fledged mangaka, with the 2 rather geeky high school kids, Mashiro and Takagi. Mashiro knew more about manga world as his uncle was a mangaka and at the same time saw all the ugly sides of the world. Together with Takagi as his teammate, he aimed to have a serialization at the weekly Shonen Jump (the magazine where 98% of your favorite anime come from). The story shows us definitely not the glory side of being a mangaka. It's all about the blood and sweat effort put into 1 manga chapter for Shonen Jump and not to mention about the competition with other mangakas. At the same time, the story also shows us the glimpse of manga culture in Japan.

I find that again, this is one of those well-done live action, story-wise. They know that you cannot fit 20 volumes (not chapters) of manga into a 2 hours movie, so they chose the scenes wisely, not trying to cram almost about everything into the movie and ended up messing up lots of things. Definitely they include enough of necessary scenes for the story. They tweaked Mashiro's proposal to be done in school instead of late night at Miho's house. They also cut the scene whereby their classmates ridiculed their effort to short cut into the manga world. To be fit into a movie, they use a totally new manga work, not the same as the ones used in the manga itself. They definitely include the scene whereby Mashiro was hospitalized due to overwork, but the situation itself is again tweaked, and they don't sprint the story up to the end of the manga's storyline. Thank goodness, they don't use the time gap to catch up with the manga. Another interesting thing that I notice is they like to use soft light with the scene between Mashiro and Miho and it makes Miho looks dreamy from Mashiro's point of view, and they kept it this way until the end, as if to show that Miho will be always Mashiro's dream. To me, it's understandable because they don't have the intention to have the ending the same as the manga. The movie closed its curtain with the graduation and the birth of the serialization, which was the hit series in the manga. I'd say that's a very well done and thought through sliced & diced, not half baked at all. It makes a difference to a movie overall experience. They balance humour (lots of it), rivalry, angst, and more importantly the spirit of youth - viva seishun! (afterall our main lead characters are high shool kids), which is the foundation of the manga.

Having Sato Takeru as Mashiro, a high school kid, is really pushing the limit. His face is too mature already, especially when you put him side by side with Kamiki (it makes the poster obviously photoshopped LOL). BUT, when you see the acting and the chemistry, to say that he's too old for a high school kid will end up as whining and nitpicking. The teamwork is so good and I totally forgot that these two were Kenshin and Soujiro. Well, not entirely forgot when they have 1 scene where Mashiro and Takagi wielded pencil and pen in the manga battle scene with Nizuma (yes, all CG, but it's so cool, and the result of doing Kenshin movies shows). I love the over the top geekiness for these two and it's adorable, especially after the hard work that they put through. They always scream histerically when something major happened along their path, together, and that makes us as the audience rooting for them even more. Since this is a manga-themed movie, they had tons of scenes of drawing manga (well, what do you expect), so definitely both of them had training of drawing manga, eg. using the G-pen, inking, coloring, etc, and for them they also have to make it look realistic (which was done very well) and cool.

I find this movie proves me that Sato Takeru is getting smart in choosing his roles. He's been in a number of live action adaptations until now, and the latter ones were all well made. We have Kenshin (still the best live action movie - the whole trilogy - as of now), Kano-Uso (I personally love this one), and now, Bakuman. I'm not saying that BECK is a disaster and heck, I even cried over ROOKIES, but compared to the his latter roles, these two becomes a so-so live adaptation. With that, I'm looking forward to his future projects!

So, you're thinking of seeing this movie to see prestine looking Sato & Kamiki, well, this is not the right movie as most of the time both of them are covered with ink and with dark circles, ha! But overall, it's a really good movie about youth, the spirit of friendship, and off course, manga!

I don't really follow Kat-tun, but the news of Taguchi leaving Kat-tun and Johnny's altogether really broke my heart. I was so shocked this morning when I scrolled down my news feed. Can't remember any shocking stuff coming from Taguchi, so it's really unexpected for me. I do know he has the long time girlfriend, but if marriage is the reason for his leaving, there should be other way. I couldn't imagine the courage that Taguchi gathered to make the decision to leave. Afterall, he's spent almost half of his life in Johnny's and entertainment business. If he quits the entertainment business altogether, that's like totally stepping out of comfort zone. I do really hope he won't regret his decision in the future because it's a very huge life turning decision, and wish him all the best of luck.

And... that would also mean that IF, IF we have Legal High season 3, there won't be anymore Ranmaru! SOBS SOBS SOBS!!!!

With that, I'll just keep on watching my favorite solo of his, FLASH. He has a nice voice and moves.. T__T T__T...

Oh well, I guess this reminds us that fandom is not permanent, people has their priority in life and we should always cherish what we have now...

I'm rewatching the whole SP franchise because I need some dose of Okada kicking ass, and Library Wars franchise is not that long (1 movie and 1 SP is just too short to be honest haha). But as I watch through SP, it reminds me again why I like SP, and why I started to watch more Okada's works afterwards (I'm a V6 fan but the failed one LOL). SP is one of those drama which is packed with actions (watch Okada kick ass jumping over rows of cars, tables, anything, to catch the bad guy), twisted conspiracy plot (I still remember the twisted feels I felt at the end of the series), and Okada double personality. No, it's not that psychological double personality like what Nino's role was in Platina Data, it's the goofy one off-duty - asking for people to introduce him to girls, and the bad ass one on-duty, plus off courst the major angst towards the climax.

You know, I almost bought that SP pin and t-shirt when I was at FujiTV a few years ago because well, the logo is cool right? SP = security police as in drama. But NOT when you're in Singapore. SP is short for Singapore Polytechnic there and the school kid has school t-shirt with the almost too similar logo with this SP logo LOL.

And I do need to mention that Maki Yoko as the female SP kicked major ass here! And her blunt personality is a delight to watch as well haha. Screencap here because... look at those lean muscles. Drama really know how to tickle fans.

A dash of a humour in the midst of a serious drama, and as you see the caps, I like this combi!

Did I mention the cool operning OST? It's one of the coolest sequence songs for V6 concert. I was fortunate to be able to see that very SP & Break the Wall sequence in both V6 concerts that I attended. And the ending OST of V6's Way of Life sapped through you at the end of every episode to remind you that there's something deeper in this drama (angst, angst, angst!).
spsn: (Default)
Honestly, I thought of dropping this drama because... how many times we've seen Ryo-chan in samurai get-up? And time slip to boot! Remember Chonmage Purin? He does look good for a samurai, but he's definitely not at Okada Junichi level, unfortunately. But I'm curious on Kamiki Ryunozuke in this drama, so I decided to give it a try. First episode is rather boring because it's just Takechi sulking about his situation and not happy with the modern Japan's people does not really carry the same 'value' as him (traditional samurai value). But 2nd episode gets interesting because...

Ah, it's Soujiro! with umbrella this time.

Well, he looks cool with it.

Things picked up after this episode, it's more lively and entertaining... so far... a very light watch, and I'm still warry that Kamiki will swallow Ryo-chan because his Sakamoto Ryoma character is very fluid as in his portrayal really reminds me of Fukuyama's in Ryomaden from the over the top gesture, wits, curiousity and thirst of knowledge, which is his too-well assimilation to the Heisei era makes so much sense (the use of chou-..., ....-ssu, which is actually how youngsters talk, not the older generation, and definitely not samurai language). Since this is not the first time Ryo-chan does a samurai role, the only thing I notice is that he's more firm in his samurai conduct compared to previous role. Maybe it's because in here he's portraying Takechi Hanpeita? Not sure. But light entertainment... is always needed to weed out any stress.

This is MJ is probably one of those segments where Matsujun can be so cool yet so dorky at the same time, and that includes sulking, whining and just being a diva. This time, he got a rival, the equally dorky Ikuta Toma, which is why I can't resis doing this cap.

Well, you can say that this is the reason why the episode is gold LOL.
Trying very hard not to cap too much dorkiness here.. )

We have V6 members appearing on Abunai Yakai again and again! We're left with Inocchi & Morita, and I hope Morita would appear next year to promote his movie *cross fingers*. Not sure if Inocchi will get to appear here to promote Kouhaku (well, it's different TV station, but, we can always hope :)). This episode we have V6's papa and mama, Sakamoto & Nagano. Both of them are foodies, so this show is all about food, food & food. Hence we'll also see lots of Sho-chan's 1001 face expression and chipmunk munching face too! I'm skipping Sato Shiori's segment because I have tons of caps, really, I ended up with more caps than before.

This is quite a compromising position, isn't it? What did Sho-chan do?

Let's find out... )

Why did both of them appear on Abunai? Ohhh, it's for Gakkou e Ikou! 2015 --> watched it, loved it, felt nostalgic over it, LOL over it, all the feels!!! That one show is V6 at its best!

I love how they got to celebrate their 20th anniversary with lots of activities and with a bang too!!!
spsn: (Default)
I kind of lost track on whether this drama is following the manga or not because there're too many filler characters here. Ishihara Satomi's chemistry with Yamapi is quite good, actually. I like it. It's either Yamapi's getting better (though the eyes is still need a lot of work, but somehow in this drama, it works), or Ishihara's playing match with Yamapi. Whatever that is, it works. And they keep the cycle of Hoshikawa admitting his perverted/stalkish behavior out of nowhere, Junko getting pissed, then something bad happens in Junko's life, the monk comes to the rescue, and we back to beginning.

In this episode, we have Jimmy Choo to the rescue! What makes an item that be seen so materialistic to be romantic? We have Yamapi replacing your own heels with this one, gently.. oh drama LOL...
PRODUCT PLACEMENT!!

Obligatory pretty scene!

This scene is really beautiful! Love it!
