Beginning 2012 is a busy year for Arashi, and we have Lucky Seven to start our 2012. It’s another overhyped, overpromote, overrated drama just because FujiTV thinks that casting Arashi brings in ratings, particularly when it’s Matsujun. Well, they’re right this time because at the end of the season, Lucky Seven beats Strawberry Night *what!?!!!?* in the rating department. So, what’s the hype about Lucky Seven is all about? Fans must have seen the fighting scene in episode 1 before the drama even started, well, it’s everywhere from news, magazine, VS Arashi, and I believe wherever FujiTV could think of. Yes, it’s because the director (or production team?) is the same one who made Gantz, but does it work the same way as Gantz?

Lucky Seven is about a detective agency Lucky. It initially has only 6 members and it has 1 more member thanks to Shuntaro, a neet who’s having affair with a married woman (this is the very first scene in Epi 1, latest gimmicks to get fangirls’ hearts aka ratings) and alas, he got caught by the detectives who later become his colleagues. As a newbie detective, Shuntaro tends to stick his nose more than necessary in cases, and Nitta, his senior in the agency, often disagrees with his way, but in the end Shuntaro has his way because he’s the lead in this drama. So, what are the cases that this drama will present to us?

I have problems with this drama that resulted me watching the whole series first before I can write an objective review. Why? Because if I just base my review on the first episode, it’ll be a very brutal review and I feel it’s unfair to dear Matsujun. The boy worked so hard for this drama, I mean, look at his toned body in episode 1, he must have worked hard to build it for our eyes’ pleasure :p. The thing about Gantz is that it has solid story telling and there’s no break in it, and I can’t even call Gantz as action packed movie because there’re more stories than the action itself. But with Lucky Seven, after episode 1, I was left with, so, what is this drama about again? Detective agency? They got a case, OK. Then they went out to investigate it, OK. Then when the agency decides to consider the case is done aka close, Shuntaro will go above and beyond to close it for the client in a more humane way. Extra perks? Fighthing scenes, OK. Matsujun kicks ass in every single episode? OK. Other than that? I don’t see anything else. That’s a problem for detective theme drama because it doesn’t make me to want to know more. This drama doesn’t focus on how the agency solve the case like normal detective drama. They’re more focus on funnies eg. The team ganging up on Junpei in nitpicking his comments (well, he’s asking for it) and the fighting scenes. I have to make myself watch this drama because I feel bad for Matsujun and don’t have the heart to abandon his drama, though I’ve dropped some of his in the past. I’d say the drama just become more interesting on the last 3 episodes, which when I look back, the rest of the episodes look like fillers. Off course, the last scene with the 5 colored Tokyo Tower will be the highlight of the final episode, so this is another way for FujiTV to get the ratings again, well it works, but it doesn’t mean the drama gets a plus point though.

When we talk about the characters in this drama, we’re looking at characters that are not well build. If you take out one of the characters in this drama, I don’t think the story will change a lot because the characters are there just for the sake of being there. Yes, I’m especially talking about the girl with the glasses and windbreaker. I totally have no idea on her character except that she’s just being there. Even when you look at the main character, Shuntaro is just there making noise but by the end of the series I don’t really get what kind of person this Shuntaro is. Yes, he did get more motivated in doing his work and got confidence that he’s actually good at being a detective, but so what? Instead of more venture in Shuntaro’s character eg. What makes him a womanizer (any trigger?), we get Shuntaro to be around in almost every single scene and he must kick ass in every single fighting scene except when he had his ass kicked by Nitta. Why? Because FujiTV need to remind the audience that Matsujun is the main cast here, not Nitta. This pattern will go around couple episodes until they cut Nitta off. Why the cut off? Probably it’s because Eita has other work, this part I’m not really sure, I just happen to come across some comments in some forum and don’t intend to do more research, so I’ll just leave it at that. And, Shuntaro spending time with his family doesn’t mean a character building. What about other characters? Compare to the main character, I’d think Junpei got more presence and though he’s a goofy character and relatively loud and exaggerated in almost every scenes, at least we know that it’s just his personality, and he can be serious at times. I don’t think this setback is the actors’ fault. They actually have a great casting, but it’s the script and plotting that have problem.

The only consolation for me on this drama is the OST, Wild at Heart by Arashi (go figure). It’s another pick me up type of song, typical Arashi song, but it comes with full blast of sparkles, glitters and rainbows that they just spark in your head every time you listen to the song. And yeah, from the PV to the performances, they all come with the shiny glitters and sparkles until you have to cover your eyes *mabushii*.

So, I’d think you’ll only pick up this drama if you’re a fan of Matsujun or Arashi fan in general that feels obligated to watch it. Other than that, if you’re into the fighting scene in the drama, you can just fast forward to the scene because I have to be honest, they’re done quite crafty and neat especially when we’re talking about drama here.

But fear not, this drama is just the beginning of Arashi invasion to your TV in 2012. Next? We have Mikeneko Holmes and Kagi no Kakatta Heya.

I'll probably watch this SP again once the sub is up because there are some missing pieces that I don't really get, but maybe I won't. I have a mixed feeling about this drama, or maybe, indifferent to be exact, because though it's in my list, I just feel obligated to watch it (it's Ohno's for goodness sake). Though it's entertaining, but yeah, I don't feel overjoy and full of praises for this one, despite the appearances of Kageyama and Tokita and PR after PR across the new years (only find out later that they mostly only promote this drama during Arashi variety shows, so it's not overly promoted... but me only watch Arashi variety shows, so me is overwhelmed).

The story is about Shotaro who had a dream of becoming a super hero (super sentai, to be exact, power ranger series anyone?) when he's a kid. He didn't forget his dream and now worked as a bad guy extra (those who wear the black spandex outfit and try to bully the hero but ended beaten up instead) in a super hero show. He then met his senpai and worked as moving sweet potato seller (the van is cute). Then his life turned upside down upon meeting the bratty yakuza daughter, Erika. The girl just jumped into his life and commanded him to do a make belief kidnapping of her to rip out money from her dad to save her sister. Shotaro's super hero wannabe instinct finally won him over and together with his senpai, they planned a kidnapping scenario. On the other part of the town, we have Erika's sister, Satsuki, was dealing with a fake money case, along with her senpai, then, there's a murder... ... what? Then, how is this 2 event collides?

I have to admit, although the first part of the story is rather confusing, but when it's all cleared, I find the reveal of the mystery (if you can call that a mystery, but I don't really have a good choice of words here) is quite interesting, which means I'm not glued to TV until the 2/3 of the drama and that bothers me because you have a star studded drama, but this drama is not wow-ing. I like Ohno's acting here, though I like him more in dark roles (so yeah, Kaibutsu-kun is not my fave). He has lots of expressions in here and they're amusing as well entertaining. Off course there are some funny scenes. Example, when Shotaro was seasick and he kept on puking at the side of the boat, Shotaro hit himself on the boat during the money delivering scene, Shotaro was finally conscious in the yakuza's house and blurted out that he's still alive. But, don't expect you'll jumping out LOL over these. Even Shotaro's WTF face when he saw Kageyama is not fantastically funny (only hardcore fans will LOL on this). The rest of the cast also act very well on their roles. Aragaki Yui is good at being the bratty ojou-chan, complete with the fake crying, bossing around and pulling off innocent look just because the whole clan dote on her.

After watching this, again, I conclude, FujiTV is lazy. Having Arashi in your cast does not equal to good drama if your script is not up there. Arashi can act their butt off (well, my standard is skewed with how much I adore them, yeah, I'm looking at you Aiba-chan), but without good script and plot, no matter how good the actors are, they won't be able to pull the audience in. So, I'm quite worried now with Lucky Seven, I hope I'm wrong though.

Remember Sakuraiba date in Himitsu no Arashi-chan Ep 144? In this episode, dear Aiba-chan cooked the Shirasu pasta for Sho-chan, and me: drooling at the pasta. Granted Aiba-chan screwed up his cooking, but it doesn't make the pasta less mouth watering, and since then, I've been wanting to cook this pasta at least once. Tried Shirasu pasta in a restaurant as soon as I saw the episode but get slightly pissed off because it was an oily pasta and shirasu (not cooked, raw) on the top. Taste OK, but it doesn't look appetizing as the one I saw in HnA. So, this time, I just made my own. There are some difference in presentation because I didn't buy nori, I put fresh chili because I like color, and lastly Aiba-chan put relatively lots amount of shirasu in the pasta which I can't really afford. Shirasu may be cheap in Japan, but it's definitely not cheap when you find it in Japanese supermarket here.

*for 1 person
100 gr pasta - boiled until al dente - put in 2 pinch of salt in the water (the part that Aiba-chan forgot to do in his :p)
1/2 red chili - sliced thinly and seeds removed
3 cloves garlic - chopped coarsely
35 gr shirasu
2 tbsp olive oil for stir fry

How to:
1. in the frying pan, add in oil, garlic and chili and saute until fragrant (don't let the garlic burned)
2. add in Shirasu, stir fry for about 1 minute
3. add in pasta, stir the pasta until the shirasu is well mixed

Tips:
1. add sunny side up egg, it'll taste better (there's no egg in the pic because I had too much eggs lately :()
2. if your budget is accommodating, add more Shirasu, the the more the merrier
3. Shirasu by itself is already salty, so don't add too much salt when you cook the pasta. I roughly only add about 2 small pinch of salt and it tastes just nice, not overwhelmingly salty

Totally non drama related, but it's food and it's Arashi related LOL...

I think I know Vermont Curry from House brand for quite some times already and I know I like this brand because it's sweet, BUT little did I know that even this curry brand cannot escape from Arashi's claw. Yeah, I just realized Aiba-chan is endorsing Vermont curry when I flip on TV channels during my stay in Fukuoka. For the fun of it, this is what I saw back then *just learned how to use the embed feature in LJ, so embarassing LOL*

Dou? So so so mouthwatering right? )

After reading the CM king and queen chart 2011, it's a no brainer why I feel like if I hate Arashi, I'll feel annoyed living in Japan now coz they're literally everywhere, and thankfully I'm one of the girls who feel giddy with happiness to see them everywhere, although a bit overwhelmed with too many Sho-chan but, that's not the point... so yeah, just sharing what I've seen from Tokyo and Fukuoka trip this year

I don't take that many pics of Arashi even if I wanted to because... it's not so funny to fangirling alone at public place (I can use 'I'm a tourist here' but I'm too self-conscious and my travel buddy started to laugh/pretend not to know me and my Japanese colleague
is not into Johnny's, so yeah) ... but it's quite interesting to see how different Tokyo and Fukuoka are in terms of Arashi is everywhere theme...

For Japanese maybe it's nothing because they see it everyday, but for me, the tourist from country who may not even know Arashi exists except when you go to Japanese embassy and saw the welcome to Japan CM played non stop, yeah, it's interesting hahaha...

Just finished watching Freeter SP, definitely will rewatch this again once the sub is up because there are some parts that I don't really understand (yeah, my Jap is still blah). Having say that, let's start with the SP that makes me laugh and awww and kyaaa for 2 hours. So, we continue what the drama has left off and fast forward to 1 year later. Seiji is still working at Ohetsu construction but now always wearing the suit and tie, the construction people there is still the same, full with laughter and warmth. Seiji is also still with Manami on long distance relationship program and thing looks very good with Seiji and we all please with what we see because our Seiji is doing well now. So, what this 2 hours SP (damn they make it looks short though) is about if everything is all well and fluffy.

Oh well, the SP is still light and fluffy with the conflict where those are the parts that I need the subs on. I can grasp all the fluffy stuff and that's how the laughter, awww and kyaaa came from. The first scene starts with Take family take an Onsen family trip and both father and son are relaxing in that clear hotspring (oh yeah, the water is clear LOL) and the bickering starts as usual. Then fast forward to main topic of this SP, marriege *gasp*. What I like in here, though they only show it in a very short time, Seiji from time to time feel insecure about the long distance relationship and that's when he starts calling Manami, and when Manami cut the call short, Seiji just feel dejected and move on, and I guess Seiji's personality is what makes their relationship works. Back on the marriege part, turns out that Manami's mom going to get re-married and Manami is upset about it and as usual, Seiji is in the middle and with a cat. Then the cat leads to the meeting of Manami with her future in-laws. Take papa is surprised when he sees the cat 'owner' is a lady, and his behaviour changes 360 degree with Seiji's rolling his eyes to that. Meanwhile, remember Teppei and Asami? Apparently Teppei is proposing and they're getting married after Teppei meet his future father in-law. What's with all these marriege in the air? And Freeter is not complete without the drama from Take mama. Take mama already all well and healthy, but apparently there's an untold story behind Take couple's marriege. So, how Seiji keeps his happy end till the end? Oh yes, it's happy end in deed, but I'll come to that.

OK, what I like. They still keep the scene where Seiji massages Take mama's hand. I'm so touched that he's still doing that even mom is all well. Then Take father and son bickering never stop to amuze me because Take papa can always come up with any ridiculous reasoning to proof his points and Seiji's face clearly says what!#$(#& and Take Mama is clearly amuzed. Next up is all the cuteness of Seiji and Manami couple. Seiji has a knack for not been able to express his feelings clearly in front of Manami and then end up being embarassed or change topic or when the mood is up, his employment agency buddy calls (yeah, the guy is still there and he always calls at the 'right' time). But that leads us to the kya part (see how fast i fast forward towards the end), his way of proposing is almost the same as the way he say 'suki' in drama, but sorry, I still like the suki in drama better, so, oh well, it's been awhile since I kya over drama so I give in.

Wait wait wait, how come I have a rant on Freeter? Oh that's because the kissing scene sucks... dear Nino, I don't know how you kiss in real life but can we put more passion in your kissing scenes? You can learn from Matsujun, no? No excuses because my kya soon dies after I saw the way you kiss. OK, next, this is Nino's drama, right? So, why on every single CM time, it's Sho's CM (yeah, I know it's not drama related, but I just need to rant :p)? From Oronamin, Aflac, Ajinomoto, Hitachi (finally, with Nino)... ... Nino, where're your CMs? I know it's been aired every now and then, but I see too many Sho, and it's your drama, not HIS. Then, we fast forward to 1 month later after Seiji proposed to Manami, suddenly Manami replacement in Ohetsu Construction shows up in suit and his appearance is done in split seconds .... ... ... and for what purpose? There's only one and only, the world Gymnastic Championship, anyone? This one is a bit pushing it to the point of amusement actually...

Bottom line, yeah, I'll rewatch this, it's a fun and fluffy drama but it concludes the whole drama, and we all want to know what's next for Seiji and Manami from the drama right? And we have our answer here :)...

Just finished watching this drama quite some time ago. Quite a late bloomer as usual (this is a 2009 drama, and heard the OST gazillion times in my MP3 player), I suddenly interested in watching this drama though I'm not really a fan of Ohno's drama (reason why take me so long to watch this one), but I can say I like this drama better than Kaibutsu-kun. I find this drama is aimed for a larger group of audience, not just restricted to fangirls. This can clearly be seen from the setting itself, a production of children show.

The drama is about Yano Kenta's life. Having lost his band members, his girlfriend and his job at one go, he basically lost everything. So, off he went to search for new job and landed a singing job as Uta no Oniisan's singing friend by mistake (he just went to the wrong interview next door). But little did he know, Kenta started to adjust himself to his new job and actually learn a lot about life while having interaction with the kids, and with that he become a more mature person.

What I like about this drama is that it gives out lots of lessons about life in a very subtle way. Messages like 'Don't give up,' 'Be yourself,' 'Work hard towards your dream and surely it'll come true,' etc resonnance throughout the whole drama. And through Kenta character, you'll learn that people change, adapt, and in Kenta's case, he realizes what he actually wants to be during the process. Set aside the heavy point, since this is family drama, there're plenty of humours in it. We have lots of over the top supporting characters (from Prince Himuro, Urara, to Kenta's family), which makes Kenta looks actually 'normal'. Funny scenes can be found all over the place but my favorite will be when Urara catches Kenta to pretend to be her boyfriend for her matchmaking session while Kenta himself is pipping on his sister's matchmaking session. Or, when Sakurai Sho to do guest appearance on the show as star of Yatterman, and in this world Yatterman is more famous than Uta no oniisan hence triggers Kenta's childish behaviour. And it's natural that Kenta has to make reference that he looks a lot like Arashi's Leader (duh, LOL). Lastly, one very important item that the children show must have is the Uta no Oniisan's animal costumes. We have bears, dogs, crows, rabbits, and even acorns and loaches (this will refer to one of Japanese nursery stories).

If you feel like watching a heartwarming light drama with lots of cute animal costumes and you want to watch this with your kids, this drama will be a good choice. You can explain those life value lessons to them with the refference of the drama because surely the kids will question why Kenta behaves like this or that.

No fangirling in here but Ohno is a good actor, and he can sing (さすが、リーダー)...

Just watched the first episode of Bartender. My Japanese is not fantastic so there're parts here and there that I don't really understand but at least I think I get the general idea of the episode and what to expect for the rest of the drama, and I like what I see. Honestly, I had doubts when I saw the news that there's going to be a drama for Bartender and Aiba is in it. Don't get me wrong, I love Aiba in My Girl, but I have doubts on how he's going to portray Ryu, the bartender. Then the doubts doubled when I saw the OST song, it's a dance song by Arashi (well, no surprise with the rate they're going), Lotus. A dance song for drama on cocktails? I seriously can't imagine on what to expect of it anymore since I love the anime version and it's a slow phase anime with the calmed bar setting focusing on the cocktails and customers' problems.

I was going to rewatch the anime while waiting for the subbed version but curiosity beats me. And, I'm so glad I didn't rewatch the anime first because it'll be a disaster if you compare the anime and the drama side by side literally, just based on this first episode. Unlike the anime, the drama setting is more dynamic, not only inside the bar. Maybe this will change as we go to the next episodes but as of now, we get to see where Ryu actually stays (the boat), and Ryu doesn't just stand behind the bar serving drinks, he gets to move around too, and I find that refreshing for live-action drama. Moving on to the plot, my limited Japanese only can sense some rivalry will partake the later episodes and so do some hazy past of Ryu, totally different from anime, and that's why you can't just compare the drama vs anime apple to apple (different from Nodame or Honey and Clover case, to name a few). For a trivia, this episode idea can be seen in episode 2 of the anime, the idea and characters are the same, but the way the story is told is totally different, so again, it's not a good idea to compare for this case. Character wise, I find that Ryu is portrayed in totally different personality that I feel like I'm totally watching a new drama, not just a realization of an anime. In here, Ryu is more human with his insecurities and worries, not just as a cool but gentle bartender who always listens to his customer's problems.

Acting wise, Aiba's acting as Ryu is quite descent for a starter, since there's not much emotional development as yet for Ryu. In first episode, we only get to see Ryu's denial for being a bartender and the flashback is the haunting reason of why he had done so. So, not much going on, but with the line up of familiar faces on the casts, I'll expect better and more interesting development throughout the series, which makes this drama, not boring at all. And now what I need is a glass of cocktail (my own concoction will do for now) and a subbed version with all the cocktail trivia as side notes. The cocktails names are all in English and.... Engrish doesn't make me easier to catch those cocktail names, but they're sure look delicious, and cooling.

And, towards the end of the episode, I kind of see where Lotus fits in in this drama, at least for this episode. The ending scene looks like Ryu is up for the next challenge (which I don't really have any idea with my limited Japanese) :p...

Review aside, now it's the fangirling moment. Aiba looks kakkoii enough in that bartender suit, but boy, he looks mecha kakkoii in trenchcoat and he wears that A LOT, yey yey yey... and oh, the way Aiba breaks the ice fufufu, he does look believable as a bartender to me, guess the training pays off.

I just can't resist to write about this one, even though the plan is to write this along w/ the rest of Fall season drama or the 2nd half of 2010 review. The series is still airing and it hasn't even cross half and my tearing start from episode 2, 3, 4 and I guess the trend will continue after I saw the Epi 5 preview. Again, Freeter is human drama and it's a family-themed. Definitely no comedy here, though they still manage to slip in some humour here and there, but that's about it. There's a potential for romance, but I sort of doubt it as I haven't seen Nino in rom-com drama so far (Oouku is a movie, not drama).

The drama is about Take Seiji, who for all his life has been living comfortably with no goal, no motivation and no sense of achievement, and definitely, no money. His philosophy is just to get by easily. That's until he started working in the new company and faced with typical working environment where his supervisor likes to take advantage of his subordinates. Having no hardship endurance skill, he just happily quited after 3 months and just hoping from 1 part time job to another for the next 2 years. And then, when his mom broke down in depression, he again tried to get by easily except that this time he couldn't escape and daddy didn't make things easier. So, Seiji has to buck up and start taking care of his mom, looking for job and bringing money to the house. How Seiji fares and how he will grow from a ungrateful jerk to, well, the character that we all love, only the drama will tell.

Now, I've seen almost all Nino's works (talk about drama marathon boot camp), and this drama is a platform for him to show that he grows as an actor. If you're touched by his character portrayal in Yasashii Jikan, Ryusei no Kizuna, Door to Door, you'll be rooting for Seiji starting from the end of Epi 1. Seiji character grows because of his love for mom and he starts to recognize the word 'sacrifice' in order to take care of mom. I was very touched as the first growth of Seiji character when he narrates that he just realizes that he's been taking for granted of his life for the past 25 years. Each episode shows that Seiji learns something from his situation and he's actually doing his best in his capacity to tackle all the problems around him. Definitely something to root for, and Seiji being Seiji, he'll break down in frustration from time to time, now knowing what to do and how to make things better, and then he moves on. Sure, he's still far from descent. Seiji still has his cockiness and the 'screw it, I don't care anymore' attitude that are definitely need to be fixed, but yeah, we'll root for him because he really loves his mom. And his interaction with his mom is very real and normal to me because we also do that to our mom from time to time if our mom nags, only in here, mom is in special condition and Seiji should not do that which he regrets it soon after and immediately rush to fix it. By Epi 4, I also cry when Seiji blurt out his frustration literally crying for not knowing what to do. It's like crying for help only he knows that nobody will run to help him and he has to somehow stand up and solve all the mess.

Next, the most hateful character in the drama so far is, daddy. You'll definitely hate the dad, and by Episode 4, you'll really despise him. Takenaka Naoto (Nodame) is really brilliant as the hateful dad. He's so convincing in nitpicking and bullying his own family and when mom now is in depression, he goes out playing around escaping the situation at home, leaving the hikkimori son that he always despises and criticize to take care of everything, And no, he's not grateful with the outcome at all, everything is not his fault, it's Seiji, mom, and sister's fault. The best hateful thing from dad is his philosophy of dad just need to work and bring home money, period, no helping out family etc.

In some ways, Freeter brings out one of the culture that I don't like. It may happens in other parts of the world too but I think it happens more in Japan. The bullying here is portrayed to be everywhere, from family, neighborhood, and office. I don't really understand adult bullying especially the neighbors bullying the mom in here, for 10 years to top it up! The housewives there (especially Nishimoto-san, 2nd most hateful character) should really get a life instead of filling their brains with hatred and jealousy just because Take household get to pay the house cheaper with company help than them. People just should accept the fact that some people are simply more fortunate and move on with their lives. Office bullying is another different aspect and Seiji having no perseverance doesn't get that he needs to curry flavor the boss and 'get along w/ split the pay evenly' tradition that the boss keep insisting to have, as much to his own advantage. And lastly, bullying inside family. What daddy has been doing is actually verbal abuse. He keeps pushing around Seiji and mom, calling them useless, weak etc etc. What happen if you keep listening to these words? You'll naturally feel that you're useless and weak, which is why mom is breaking down.

What you learn in this drama is not to take for granted what your mom has been doing for you year by year. If you are, you only realize and regret when you don't have it anymore. One of the very touching portrayals from this drama is when in the past, mom taking care of Seiji when he's sick and never leaves him by keep holding his hand, and then moving to present time, now it's Seiji holding mom's hand to calm her down from the depression symptoms. Yeah, a good tear jerker, in deed.

Don't mistake this drama with the other drama, Oh! My Girl (which theme is very similar too). I always thought that this one is the same drama and I happily overlooked this last year. Even when Arashi released the single My Girl, I thought that it's just another typical Arashi song, only to wonder why such a rush in releasing new single after another... until I watched the subbed M-station of My Girl that I found out that it's OST of Aiba's drama. Yeah, by now it should be noted that every time Arashi released a single, you should expect that it's either for CM or their own drama/movie (talk about productivity and cash cow). Now, Aiba is Arashi member with the least drama under his belt, after all, this is his first lead drama, compare to Nino and Matsujun who got tons under their resume. But fear not, his performance here is totally not to be underestimated, even I was surprised with this and wonder he should get more chances on drama instead of being baka-tensai of variety shows which he's too good at it, which means taking more challanges.

Back to My Girl, the drama is about Kazama Masamune-kun who mopped around for 6 years for being dumped (I can't really find the right word for this because things just left hanging between them) by his girlfriend only to find out that he has a daughter (a cute one in deed) after the girlfriend passed away. And the journey of presto fatherhood starts and you'll be definitely rooting on the young father who works so hard to be a father while making ends meet and searching his own path, after all he's only 24 years old.

By now, there're tons of drama about single parenthood in both K-drama and J-drama land. But to me, My Girl holds a different feeling when you watch it. It touches on so many aspects of parenthood, regardless whether you're a single parent or not. In some way, My Girl brings out a far heavier atmosphere than regular commedy drama (I'm talking about Oh! My Lady father & daughter relationship). Masamune and Koharu relationship here is more real and it's not always about cuteness that you'll say 'awwww', they don't affraid to show each other their ugly side and unhappiness because from there, they learn from each other to build what's called a family. And in here, we also see how the support from the people around us helps a lot when it comes to parenthood, especially being a single parent. It also helps that Koharu here is depicted as a child with surprisingly very mature way of thinking for her age. She also has the care and sensitivity towards the people around her at such a young age. And Masamune's character in here is the opposite of Koharu. In the beginning of the drama, Masamune is described to be in denial that he has a daughter and then learns to accept the reality and starts to build up his character from a wuss to a kakkoii dad (oh well, I have to also tag kawaii dad in here too). With this, by the end of every episode, I always feel like I'm a crybaby because I end up either bawling or tearing over the father and daughter.

Now the fun part. Though this drama is quite heavy in emotional part (or it's only me being emo over human drama), this drama also has cute moments though definitely can be counted by finger. BUT, when there's one, it's literally cute and you'll be really 'awwww' and follow by 'kyaaaaa' because you cannot tell which one is cuter, the dad or the daughter. Yes, Aiba is good at being cute, but surprisingly he's also good at crying scene. His crying is not as beautiful as Nino's (watch Yasashii Jikan and you'll know what I mean), but it'll pierce your heart and I cry with him. Another fun fact, other JE boys appearance. We have a Kanjani8 boy is also here as Tomoya sensei (always thought that he looks familiar) and at the final episode, Sho-chan appears as guest. My Girl also starts a new tradition for Arashi. For fans to know whose going to have a drama next, watch the final episode and the Arashi member making appearance will have his drama next season. So, as I said, My Girl has Sho-chan, then Tokujo Kabachi has Ohno, then Kaibutsu-kun has Matsujun, then Natsu Niji has Nino, so it'll be interesting to anticipate who will show up at Freeter's last episode. Many guess it'll be Sho-chan, but we'll see. Isn't it great that we have 1 year round of Arashi drama?

This drama also shows us some lessons to learn and appreciate, at least for me. It makes us appreciate what our parents has done for us year by year without fail and we often take it for granted and without realizing it, expecting it to happen just naturally. All the efforts that our parents have put through to raise us is learnt when we ourselves starts the journey of parenthood and come to appreciate our parents more. Also, in this drama, I can really feel how Masamune and Koharu grieves over Youko-san's passing because it reminds me of how I myself grieves over my mom's passing, so maybe that's why I bawl more on this drama compare to other father-daughter-themed dramas.

I usually write on my FB account, but since I open a LJ account, I thought why not write here too. Recently I've been devouring lots lots of old drama, not sure why but guess, drama is a good way to release stress so the equation goes to more stress = more drama.

** I still haven't master how to align the pics on the left-hand side of the article, notice this LJ setting is very similar to blogspot which is not very user-friendly to me OR I'm just so used to FB notes style.

Some of these old drama probably are just drama that everybody already watch but for some reason I never be bothered to watch or got preoccupied with other stuff or just happen to be on the bottom of the list. Another thing that you might catch on is that there'll be repeated names w/in the series again and again. That's because I'm going down my old drama list by JE boys and looking back, over 80% of dramas from year 1998 (that's my cut off) has JE boys on them in 1 way or another. I just pick those where they are the lead and looks interesting (there are also lots of crappy ones but let's not go there). I'll start the Part 1 w/ Family-themed drama. So, now let's the list begin:

Dare Yori Mo Mama Wo Aisu ~ This is a family drama but with a twist and no JE boys in it (that I know of). The parent in this family has a reversed role, the father is a house-husband and the wife is the bread maker. The family has 3 children. The oldest son is a guy who somehow always running away from relationship. The second daughter is a girl who thinks marriage as an escape from working life. And the youngest son is rather embarrassed of having his dad coming to the PTA meeting. So, what's so special about this drama? First, because I like the father (he's also the father in Mukodono). He's a veteran actor and his acting is very good, you can feel the fatherly love in the family and though silly on the face value, he's the one who's working the hardest in keeping the family together. Second, this is the first family drama ever that actually bring up the topic of homosexual and the best thing is that in this drama, the family is the one who support the son to actually admit that he's gay (even American drama will never do this). Third, eye candy factor, the eldest son is the ex-EXILE member, which is an ikemen too *wink*. Too bad he's a gay here, but he acted the gayness in full fledge including the love confession scene etc, very different from his role in 'Tengoku Matteru' (a movie that I'm still searching on for the subbed version and also has Inohara (V6) in it). Overall, it's a refreshing and fun drama to watch, it also teaches you the value of family and what makes you happy the most.

Atashinchi No Danshi ~ This is a drama that everybody watch and I'm the late bloomer just watched it some months ago which starts this old drama re-look trend. The story is outrageous but the moral of the story is about family, again this is a family drama but very not normal family. I mean, it's a dream family for a fangirl because in that family there's 6 adopted sons which are all ikemen (except the youngest one). Most notable ones are the first (Kaname Jun), third (Mukai Osamu aka Seno!), fourth (Yamamoto Yusuke aka the aura reader from Hana Kimi), fifth (Seto Koji from Koizora). The story starts when the homeless girl have to marry an oji-san in order to pay her debt. Upon the death of the oji-san, she has to take care of his 6 adopted children which definitely not accepting her as the okaa-san. So, this drama is about how the girl manage to pull together these 6 ikemen as a family. Lots of fun, touchy moments and also LOTS of fan service (you'll know what I mean if you watched it already). Most notable acting in here is Mukai because his character is the one with lots of problem (single dad taking care of the son that's not even his). Plus point, for those Kamen Rider fans, this is a drama to watch because there're 3 Kamen Rider in here.

Yasashii Jikan ~ This 2005 drama is actually in a human drama genre, but still family themed. Basically it's about how time heals the wound of those who are left behind and time allows us to forgive those who we feel have wronged us. In this case, it's about how long a father (a very stubborn one in deed) takes to forgive his son for taking away the wife that he loves so much. I love this drama to the bits of it. It's a very slow pace (even the OST is killing the time with its slow tempo) but well thought drama with location setting in Furano, one of the very beautiful small town in Hokkaido. The seasons that they're portraying are autumn and winter. So you'll see lots of orange, red, green which basically are the autumn color and beautiful white for the winter. There're only 3 major set for this drama, the dad's cafe (which is very tasteful), the dad's friend cafe (which is very homey), and Takuro's workshop. Aside from the set, I like the dad's acting, played by Terao Akira. His character is always seemed so calm on the surface but he carries lots of pain and hatred toward his son and when he gaze with his pained eyes, you can't help but feeling sorry for him although you want to rip his head off for being so stubborn for closing his heart while his own son is reaching out for him. I also like Nino's acting here. He depicts the child with a very troubled past. His dad is never around because of his business trip and he has no role model to look up to (his mom is always there but the boy still needs his father, right?). He tried to reach out to his dad after the accident but was shut up clearly (take up to 8th episode for the stubborn dad to notice). One of the bawling moments is one night when Takuro missed his dad and peeking from behind the trees to see him, and just start crying there. A beautiful scene, and I cried along with Takuro.

Haikei, Chichiue-sama ~ This drama is about a family who owns a Ryoutei (a high class Japanese style restaurant) with a long tradition. Located in Kagurazaka, a small town in Tokyo, which houses lots of geishas, and still in existing as of now. In the midst of it, the plot leads you to see how the town is changing. And on top of this is the main lead, a struggling cook's story. Ippei, the cook, doesn't know who his dad is and always wonder if so and so is his dad and what his life would be like. In the midst of his wondering, lots of things happen, both funny and heartwarming, including him falling in love with the girl who speaks French 3 days a week (this is the funny part to the point of annoying when she speaks French, but she's Kuroki Meisa and she's forgiven). No bawling moment here, but I like the way the story goes and all the side stories surrounding it and how the old Japanese tradition should be passed over or not is interesting. Also, I like how every episodes starts off with the narration, basically recaping the previous episode and wonder what will happen next, and always citing 'Haikei, Chichiue-sama' on the beginning. And lastly, off course, other than Nino, there's another JE boys here, Yokoyama from Kanjani8.

Yamada Taro Monogatari ~ This is a happy family drama. The story is about the poor boy, Yamada Taro (and called An-chan by the siblings) who goes to elite school but everybody thought he's rich and he hangs out with the richest boy in school. What special about this boy? He has 6 little siblings, a loving but useless mom and a wanderer father, and they are all squeezed in a hut (in the middle of Tokyo). The absurdity of this drama is to the level of Hana Kimi, and its set up also reminds you of Hana Kimi minus the gender bending character. What's charming about this drama is the way An-chan character is portrayed, he's so loyal to his family that he's willing to sacrifice everything just to see his family smile. Example, in Ep 2, An-chan takes part time job as a maid in Takuya's house complete with the maid costume (fan service, much?) to buy the younger brother baseball gloves. And the way An-chan gaze when he see the siblings smile and laugh with happiness will melt any fangirls away (including me). Bonus point, 2 JE boys here, Nino and Sho from Arashi. And the OST is Happiness (Arashi) --> see how convinient this is?

OK *pause* you do realize by now what I'm listing dramas which has Nino keyword in it? Yep, that's because I'm running down Ninomiya Kazunari's drama list. He just happened to be in LOTS of good family drama. Even his latest one, now currently on air, 'Freeter Ie Wo Kau', is another family drama <-- a must watch because it has Takenaka Naoto, Stressman in Nodame.

Ryusei No Kizuna ~ This is one drama that I misjudged big time. I've been putting this one off since it's on air in 2008 because of : 1. See the poster? Oh so gloomy and dark 2. Read the synopsis on mysoju? Oh so depressing, it's about 3 siblings whose parents are murdered and they plan to kill the culprit for revenge 3. See Nishikido Ryo in there? He's so good in phsychotic roles (refer to Orthros no Inu and Last Friends) that if you combine point 1 & 2, you'll see all the gloominess in this drama. BUT, boy I was wrong. This drama is nothing but gloomy. Yes, it's sad and touchy to see the parents killed in a cold blooded way, but the way the story goes is nothing but it. Turn up the 3 siblings grow up just fine with the oldest working in curry restaurant (serving Hayashi No Rice), the 2nd one is running an adult video store and spending his money at host club, and the 3rd one just quit her job and got conned by some auntie. Shii (the sister) couldn't accept that she's been conned, so the eldest, Koichi, came up with the plan to con back the auntie. And the drama starts from here. Many hilarious moments especially on the conning skit and also when Sagi (Nakashima Mika) shows up. I particularly like Nino's acting in Ep 9 when Koichi realize who killed his parents and he portraying his anger very well there. Off course here there's 2 JE boys, Nino and Ryo-chan (Kanjani8 & NEWS, take your pick) and OST is by Arashi (Beautiful Days) and Nakashima Mika (Orion). Another convinient case of, you star, you sing, you promote, ne?

OK, I promise, last one from Nino's list (that of family-themed)

Marathon ~ A drama SP, means only 1 episode (yey). Marathon is similar to Door To Door (another bawling section drama) which is why I don't include Door To Door here. The main point to cross here is how big a mother's love is. This story is based the true story of an autistic marathon runner. While the boy end up not winning the marathon, but the hard work, patience and the tears that the mom put into raising him up then showering him with love until she find that his son has a keen in running and then training him to do marathon, is very touching and basically I just bawl and bawl because it reminds me of my late mom, and bawl again.

And now, stay tuned for Part 2 (it'll misc genre... anything thrown in, maybe there will be part 3, too)
